I-94/CH-37 POP UNTIL WE DROP: A POPCORN STORY

 

Here's a great story about popcorn! The script is a Two for the Price of One Value-Added Package and comes in two formats: Choral Speaking/Reading and Readers Theater. For Intermediate/Advanced Readers. 

This story poem explores the life of a popcorn seed from soil to cooking pot and imparts a few important "popcorn facts" along the way. There's always something fascinating to learn about plants, especially this popular confection!

Throughout most of its life, the popcorn kernel is silent. It doesn't make a sound. The same is true for this story - until the finale! The script ends in a spirited "round" of popping corn sounds. Your readers can either speak the "round" or sing the words to the tune of "Ferre Jacques".

The story includes references to building leaves and roots through carbon dioxide, growing new kernels thanks to pollination, and even harvesting and storing the dried kernels.

Did you know the reason this corn can pop is because each kernel contains a little starch?

And when it gets hot,
That moisture turns to steam.
The pressure builds up,
And just like in a dream,
Each kernel explodes!
Explodes all around.
Talk about Ka-boom, Ka-bam!
Talk about sound!

An upbeat rhythm and some strategically placed hand-clapping or finger snapping combine to make this piece a delight to perform.
