Christmas Scripts
P-16 ARDITH MAGEE AND THE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SPREE (Primary Version)
Ardith Magee has four pets: an alligator, an armadillo, an anteater, an antelope, and an antosaurus. She decides to take each on a Christmas shopping spree to the local mall. Ardith's pets buy advent calendars, acoustic guitars, antbrittle,ankle bracelets, candied applies, and airline tickets to Australia. On Christmas morning Ardith's mother receives a box of Aunt Anna's All-American Apricot Jellies and Jams. Her father receives a pair of hot pink angora socks. By now, of course, you've noticed that Ardith's Christmas is filled with "A" words! The best gift, however is an L word -LOVE, and that gift is given when the antosaurus dries his tears and wishes everyone a "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" (PRIMARY ) (Teacher narrates, whole class participates.)

I-65 THE SHOEMAKER AND THE ELVES (Intermediate)
This Readers Theater script has been written as a Christmas play, but may also be performed on any other occasion by simply changing the references to Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother's Day, or even the Shoemaker's wife's birthday! The script follows the traditional fairy tale plot and includes visits from a hungry traveler, with whom the couple share the last of their meager food, two thoughtless and unkind customers, and as many wonderful elves as you care to create. Moral of the story: What goes around, comes around.

I-70 AT CHRISTMAS TIME (Intermediate and up)
Too much hustle, bustle, and holiday shopping sometimes causes us to forget the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place. This Readers Theater script, written with rhythm and rhyme, talks about the time and energy used to "to fill each stocking with gifts for one and all," pushing through crowds at the mall, the search for the perfect tree, and endless concert rehearsals. Finally a little voice cries "STOP" and asks us to consider the true "reason for the season." Both a secular ending and a more spiritual ending are included so that readers may chose and send just the right message. This version of the script is formatted for 6 to 11 intermediate readers. CH-32 THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING! (Primary Readers)
A Short Shared Reading Script Featuring Choral Reading and Read-Aloud Solo Parts.
This holiday script is based on an old English Nursery Rhyme“Christmas is Coming”:
Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat
Please to put a penny in the old man's hat;
If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do,
If you haven't got a ha'penny then God bless you!
The words of the nursery rhyme "Christmas is Coming" are historically associated with the traditional English Christmas celebration and the serving of geese for the Christmas feast. The meaning that was conveyed to children through this rhyme was that during this festive period, each should give to charity, according to their means.
In this modernized version, pennies, candy canes, and presents are suggested as good things to put "in the old man's hat". In the end, the readers find what they believe to be the perfect gift for the old man: their friendship and an invitation to Christmas dinner!

A Russian Christmas Legend for Intermediate to Advanced Readers.
Grandmother Babushka brings gifts to the children of Russia each Christmas Eve. She is an important "gift-giver" there and her story has become a well-known Christmas legend. Why does she wander from home to home, sneaking up the stairs, examining each child's sleeping face, and leaving three gifts beside each pillow? Because she is seaching for the Christ-Child!
This story-poem tells how the shepherds, while following the star, stop at Babushka's door and invite her to journey with them. She is tempted, but decides to enjoy her bed and warm fire instead.

Instead they both run off in different directions trying to find other trails. Unfortunately, every other trail out of the woods seems to be a dead-end! Will the little mice ever find their way home? Of course they do – and they do it with the help of a Hanukkah Menorah!

A quick search on the internet will yield a number of pages about The First Thanksgiving and the foods the pilgrims probably enjoyed on that special occasion. Does the menu differ from the Thanksgiving foods we eat today? Well, yes, and the differences are interesting and sometimes surprising! Some of the food may be different, but the reason for Thanksgiving has remained basically the same throughout the years. It is a time to be grateful.
This story in rhyme talks about the Indian guests who were invited to share that first Thanksgiving meal, the foods that were served, and the reason for the occasion. Readers need to be able to deal with names like "Wampanoags" (wamp-a-NO-ags) and "Massasoit" (mass-a-soy-it). These are the names of the Indian tribe and chief who were invited by the pilgrims to take part in the first Thanksgiving. P-17 OWL'S PERFECT VALENTINE (Primary Version)
Here's another holiday "draw and read" story for primary readers. Teacher narrates this tale about Oliver the wise old owl who is searching for a perfect valentine. Eager listeners make owl sounds, repeat each line of the repetitive readers chorus (echo fashion), and clap their hands in rhythm to the chorus beat. Narrator stops after each verse to draw a simple shape on the blackboard or display pad. The story ends with the drawing of a perfect valentine complete with heart shape, cupid's arrow, and lacy edges. Oliver ruffles his "wiggle wiggle wings", taps his "tickle tickle toes", and has a very happy valentine's day (PRIMARY ) (Teacher narrates, whole class participates.)

Five fancy, funny, frilly, fantastic, and "fudgy" Valentines are sent off to win a Valentine's heart. The sender swears there is nothing too good for the intended. Well, almost nothing. The last cards are the most expensive, cost 50 cents each, and are filled with fudgy chocolates stuffed with "creamy peach". Too much temptation. CH.RT-54 IF YOU WON’T BE MY VALENTINE
A combination Choral Reading/Readers Theater script for Intermediate readers. If you won't be my Valentine, what will I do? This script explores all those many possibilities: Cause a scene, go beyond the extreme, pine and whine, not feel fine, fidget, frown and fuss, mope, not cope, fight and bite? The list goes on and on. In the end, the problem is solved by one of the wise and more realistic solo readers. If you won't be my Valentine, I'll just have to find somebody else! What a concept! A tongue-in-cheek look at finding just the right Valentine.

CH.RT-55 A VEGETABLE VALENTINE
A combination Choral Reading/Readers Theater script for Elementary School readers.
"You may not carrot all for me,
You may turnip your nose.
But if your heart could beet with mine,
Forever lettuce hope,
There is no reason in this world
Why we two canteloupe."
This Valentine script was inspired by the 6-line poem above. It was found on the Internet and the author is unknown. Our script is a much expanded version, and includes 18 garden plants in a completely new read-aloud story-poem. Most of the plants named can be found in the vegetable garden including sage (a plant leaf used for seasoning). However, there is one imposter! The cantaloupe is mentioned, and it is a fruit. You might ask your students to identify the one non-vegetable in the group.

St. Patrick's Day Scripts
P-18 A HOLIDAY FOR PADDY O'SHAY (Primary Version)
A shoe mending leprechaun, Paddy O'Shay, decides to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by taking the day off! He puts away his needle and thread, grabs his shillelagh, and marches off through the shamrocks singing his own special song. Readers and listeners alike repeat that song throughout the story, as our leprechaun embarks on a journey to find "The Leprechaun Who Mends Shamrocks!" All participate (through sounds and actions) as Paddy marches, runs, swims, and climbs in his quest to find the leprechaun he seeks. Paddy finds her, of course, and returns home to "dance a jig and sing his song one last time." A festive way to learn about St. Patrick's Day (PRIMARY ) (Teacher narrates, whole class participates.)

I-31 A HOLIDAY FOR PADDY O'SHAY (Intermediate Version)
It is the "tip top of a St. Patrick's Day morning" when a shoe mending leprechaun named Paddy O'Shay decides to take the day off! Paddy grabs his "sprig of shillelagh" and strolls off to find a green sewing needle threaded with shamrock green thread. The needle tells him to find "The Leprechaun Who Mends Shamrocks". An old leprechaun, dressed all in orange, invites Paddy to help play a jig on the fiddle, reed pipe, and harp, but Paddy follows the needle's advice and finally meets an ancient leprechaun who turns shamrocks into four leaf clovers -for the "luck o' the Irish!" Many St. Patrick's Day vocabulary words and phrases find meaning in this exciting script (INTERMEDIATE ) (7 Readers)

I-103 OUTSMARTING THE LEPRECHAUNS (A Readers Theater Script for Intermediate or Advanced Readers).
This is a great script for older readers to read aloud to younger children on St. Patricks Day! It is also a great script to read aloud any time you are studying Ireland!
An innkeeper and his very capable wife find their inn invaded by invisible leprechauns. Knowing that the little men love Boxty Cakes (Irish Potato Pancakes) and never eat breakfast, helps the pair outsmart their unwanted guests. For dinner, "Colcannon" is served on the lid of a jelly jar. Next evening, "Dublin Coddle" is served in half an egg shell. Finally "Boxty Cakes" are served in a sewing thimble. This is all part of a devine plan to outsmart the invading leprechauns - and it works! (A description and recipes for the three dishes mentioned here are included in the Teacher Version of this script).

P-44 YOU CAN'T TRUST A LEPRECHAUN! (Primary Readers).
Everybody knows you can't trust those trickly little Irish fellows dressed in green - don't they? Well, the poor grumpy troll in this story is having a terrible time trying to figure it out. He's determined to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Only problem is, he's taking his traveling directions from the very leprechaun who owns the pot. The troll travels back and forth between the rainbow's beginning and end, right side and left side, front side and back side. Each time he finally reaches a destination, he finds no gold - just the leprechaun ready to give him a new set of traveling directions! Will this story never end? Possibly not. The readers of this piece think the troll is out there this very minute, still stomping around trying to find that elusive pot of gold.

Everybody knows you can't trust those trickly little Irish fellows dressed in green. Well, the poor grumpy troll in this story is having a terrible time trying to figure it out. He's determined to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Only problem is, he's taking his traveling directions from the very leprechaun who owns the pot. The troll travels back and forth between the rainbow's beginning and end, right side and left side, front side and back side. Each time he finally reaches a destination, he finds no gold, but he does find the leprechaun who is always ready to give him a new set of traveling directions! Will this story never end? Possibly not. The readers of this piece think the troll is out there this very minute, still stomping around trying to find that elusive pot of gold.

A wonderful story poem. Teacher takes on major narration while children are assigned easy, repetitive phrases. Thirteen verses tell this Easter tale. After each verse is read, a simple shape is drawn on the blackboard or display pad. The circus has come to town announcing "Special Guest Star! Easter Thrills and More!" No one, including the clowns, know the identity of the special guest star. As one drawn shape is added to another, the mystery is solved. On Hallowe'en night Pam and Ron, Jan and Pete, dress themselves for "Trick or Treat!" They call the dog (the dog named Rags, the dog with the tail that always wags) and the cat (the cat named Scat, the cat who always smells a rat) and all head off to meet THE THING THAT GLOWS IN THE DARK!!! Teacher narrates and assigned readers recite the many simple lines which are repeated again and again throughout the tale. Readers and listeners alike join in on the "Trick or Treat" chorus. Simple shapes are drawn on blackboard or display pad as the story unfolds. Scat the cat solves the mystery and the finished drawing shows our dreaded "THING!" It's a jack-o-lantern, of course. Four readers tell the spooky tale of Jamie and Matt who decide to spend Hallowe'en night camping out on the grounds of an old haunted estate. The boys collect their tent, backpacks, and supplies, then meet in front of the estate gate. Both notice the "strange eerie light" which seems to follow them everywhere. Around the corner a hounddog's bark warns of the Thing that glows in the dark, but the boys ignore the warning, scout out the property, and set up camp. When the boys become separated, a black cloud covers the moon, and Matt alone confronts the dreaded Thing. CH-47 NINE GREEN GOBLINS (Primary)
Two teacher narrators (or older readers) narrate this story poem with the help of ALL GIRLS, ALL BOYS, ALL and a repetitive ALL CHORUS. The tale is about nine Halloween goblins who are really very hungry and wish for the kinds of food most youngsters like: pizza, hot dogs, macaroni, spaghetti, scrambled eggs, etc. Near the end of the poem, the ninth goblin takes charge and suggests a solution to their hunger problems. It includes going to your school (you insert the name of your school and town/city/village in the text) and invading the lunchroom. Young readers especially enjoy placing the story in their own school, so this is lots of fun to read aloud and a great script to perform for other classes in your school. The script is for primary readers who can read simple words and phrases.
